A dataset of notable players of African heritage who represented non-African nations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Throughout the 2026 World Cup, one question kept coming back to us with every match we watched: where did these players’ journeys really begin?
Behind the goals and the highlights was a deeper story of family journeys, migrations, sacrifices and African roots that shaped many of these footballers long before they reached the world’s biggest stage. Behind many names on the team sheet were stories stretching across continents: parents who made life-changing moves, generations with ties to Africa, and players carrying their heritage far beyond the stadium lights, whether by choice or by circumstance.
So we went looking. What we found surprised even us all.
Ten African nations played at the 2026 World Cup. Another 101 players with African roots played for 21 countries outside the continent.
Each arc flies from a player's African heritage to the national team he plays for. Drag to spin the globe, then tap a marker, or pick a country below, to follow its routes. Players with two heritage countries count towards both.
